FUNCHAL - GARDENS AND PARKS - (A) SANTA CATARINA PARK

The subtropical climate, the volcanic origin, the orography, and the humidity of the region, allow the existence of a variety of exuberant vegetation, and exotic flora, with high diversity.

Charles Darwin included several Madeiran species in his scientific works. James Cook visited the archipelago in search of rare botanicals. He started systematic scientific thinking in Europe to know the flora and fauna.

Funchal offers parks and gardens of rare beauty, open to be visited at any time of the day, whatever the season.

Many of these gardens are dimensional with different textures, lights, colors, and smells, and some of them host events such as festivals and concerts.

Come and discover this natural beauty and its pleasant aromas!

SANTA CATARINA PARK
32.646023, -16.913052

It is the first park in the city, with an area of 35,200 m2.

The first known design was made by the first Portuguese landscape architect, Francisco Caldeira Cabral, and over the following 40 years, other authors designed what is now known as Santa Catarina Park.

It was the location of Nossa Senhora das Angústias Cemetery from 1837, which was transferred to São Martinho between 1939 and 1944. The Chapel of Santa Catarina is a central part of this composition, being the first religious temple erected in Madeira in 1425, with a fabulous view of Funchal’s harbor.
